There’s no question about the importance of Washington DC. Named after one of the founders of America — George Washington — it’s not only the capital of the United States of America but also one of the world’s political capitals. On top of that, it’s one of America’s most visited cities, with more than 20 million people visiting annually.
Here, with the famous Capitol building in the centre, you’ll find US’s most important juridical and political institutions. There are a lot of museums, monuments, historical houses — and a lot of other things connected to American history.
That being said, Washington is quite easy to reach as there’s a large number of tourists that visit it every day. Here are the most popular private jet charters to Washington DC.
Topics
1. Private Charter: New York to Washington DC
The commercial flight from the Big Apple to the capital of the USA usually takes around an hour and a half. Doing the same thing with a private jet will make the flight even shorter, usually to less than an hour spent in the air. All in all, quite a short and pleasurable flight.
New York to Washington DC: Pricing Options
Renting a jet from New York City to Washington won’t cost you more than 18,000 dollars at its highest. The smaller planes are around 10,500 dollars on average. The only difference is whether you choose to travel with a small or a large company.
Below are the prices and the planes that are available for this trip.
The prices below are based on Global Charter. Note that other private charter companies might have lower or higher prices, depending on the company. Also, the prices presented are one way, just double them if you want to find out the round trip prices.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to Washington, DC | Estimated flight time |
Very Light Jet | 4-6 | From $11,150 | 1 h |
Light Jet | 6-8 | From $10,350 | 1 h |

New York: Airport Options
Everybody knows that New York is one of the centres of the world in any sense possible. Obviously, that applies to air transportation as well, and that’s why there are no less than 12 airports in the wider New York area.
Here’s the trio of airports that are most suitable for receiving and servicing private jets.
- John F. Kennedy International Airport
- Teterboro Airport
- Westchester County Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport
Named after one of the great heroes of the 20th century, JFK international airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. Located just 26 kilometres from Manhattan, the airport can be reached by taxi, bus, or train, or you can rent a car if that’s your preferred transportation option. The hotel boasts many shops, services, and even hotels — like the Marriott and Courtyard.
Three FBOs are in charge at JFK, and do all the handling and servicing of the private planes.
They also offer a variety of amenities, such as VIP rooms, conference rooms, food and drink, and transportation.
Teterboro Airport
Teterboro Airport is probably the best choice in the New York area if you’re travelling with a private jet. Located only 19 kilometres from the heart of the city, it’s an important private and corporate hub. Namely, almost 500 private jets land at Teterboro every day.
That being said, the FBOs operating there are great at taking care of private clients and servicing private jets. Here are the four FBOs listed in no particular order:
Westchester County Airport
Westchester County Airport is mostly famous for an unusual thing: being the background of many high-budget Hollywood movies, like The Best Man, Random Hearts, and Meet The Parents. It’s also the second busiest airport in the area, very popular among private clientele.
The only minus is the distance from New York — namely, Westchester Airport is located around 50 kilometres from Manhattan Midtown. The transportation options, on the other hand, are quite decent, as you can choose between rental car, taxi, bus, and train transport.
There are, once again, four superb FBOs at the airport, ready at any moment to service your private jet and cater to your needs:
2. Private Charter: Toronto to Washington DC
Surprisingly, the second shortest flight on our list is not from the USA, but from Canada. Washington DC is quite near the northern border of America, making the trip very short, usually about an hour and a half. As private jets are both more comfortable and faster, the flight rarely exceeds an hour and 15 minutes.
Toronto to Washington DC: Pricing Options
The charters from Toronto to Washington hold the second place on the list in terms of cheapness, except the super midsize jet, which is quite expensive. The VLJ and the light jet — which are preferable for short-distance flights — are quite affordable, as private jets go.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to Washington DC | Estimated flight time |
Very Light Jet | 4-6 | From $15,450 ($20,874) | 1 h 15 mins |
Light Jet | 6-8 | From $10,800($14,591) | 1 h 15 mins |
Super-Midsize Jet | 8-9 | From $85,000 ($114,843) | 1 h 5 mins |
Toronto: Airport Options
Toronto is the capital of Ottawa province, and the most populous city in Canada. Taking that in mind, but also its important strategic position, it’s no surprise that Toronto is considered a major financial, business, and transport centre. The city boasts no less than ten airports, the two most suitable for receiving private jetters being:
- Billy Bishop City Airport
- Toronto Pearson Airport
Billy Bishop City Airport
Billy Bishop Airport is listed as number one, since it’s probably the most suitable institution in the region for receiving and servicing private jets. The location is definitely its main bonus: it takes only ten minutes by car to reach the airport from the centre of Toronto. The airport is very small, which in other cases would be a problem. But, since heavy jets are out of the picture, it makes it a perfect spot for landing a light or a midsize jet.
There are two great FBOs at the airport, Porter and StolPort, both excellent for private clientele. They’ll take care of everything when it comes to your jet, like luggage transport, fuel, and maintenance, but also provide a variety of luxurious amenities and services for you and your fellow travellers.
Toronto Pearson Airport
To put it plainly, Toronto Pearson Airport is the busiest airport near the city. According to the data collected in 2019, it’s been regularly receiving more than 50 million passengers every year. It’s further away from Downtown Toronto than Billy Bishop, but the difference is not radical: Pearson Airport is located just 22 kilometres from the centre. It’s also quite easy to reach, since it offers rental car, taxi, bus, and train transport every day of the year.
There are three FBOs available at your service when you reach the airport. Sky Service, which holds two private terminals at the airport, the long lasting but still going strong SkyCharter, and the famous Signature Flight Support. All of them are equally capable of servicing private jets.
3. Private Charter: Denver to Washington DC
There are around 2,300 kilometres of air and clouds between Denver and Washington DC. That translates to three and a half hours spent on a plane, depending on the size of the jet. The heavy jet is, obviously, the fastest, and will get you from the capital of Colorado to the White house in only three hours.
Denver to Washington DC: Pricing Options
The prices are also variable, depending on the jet, but the differences between them is not extremely big. The smaller planes, like the light and midsize jets, cost around 25,000 dollars on average, while a heavy jet will cost you and the other potential 18 travellers 40,000 dollars.
Below are the estimated prices for chartering the various types of jets:
Aircraft Type | No of passengers | Average price to Washington DC | Estimated flight time |
Very Light Jet | 4-6 | From $27,300 | 3 h 40 mins |
Light Jet | 6-8 | From $22,200 | 3 h 20 mins |
Midsize Jet | 6 – 10 | From $25,900 | 3 h 5 mins |
Heavy Jet | 8 – 18 | From $40,150 | 3 h |
Denver: Airport Options
Denver is the biggest city in Colorado, and the 19th most populous city in the United States. The nearby beautiful Rocky Mountains have had a long tradition of magnetizing tourists from both the USA and the rest of the world. There are three main airports in the area around Denver, one of which is named after the sublime mountain range:
- Centennial Airport
- Denver International Airport
- Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport
Centennial Airport
Centennial Airport, located in Denver Tech Center — the business district in South Denver — is one of the busiest airports in the US. Just 19 kilometres from the city centre, the airport has been functioning perfectly since 1968. It has almost 340,000 operations on average a year, and it’s quite developed and highly functional, offering different types of amenities and services.
There are two FBOs available at the airport that can take care of you and your private jet:
Both of them are big names in the airline industry, and more than capable of doing their job properly.
Denver International Airport
Ranked as the 20th busiest in the world and 5th busiest in the USA, Denver International Airport boasts a great location and offers a variety of great services. It’s just 20 minutes a drive from east of Denver, but also quite close to the City of Aurora, which is completely dedicated to the whole airport business, offering great hotels and plane-related services.
Interestingly enough, Denver International Airport is famous for two other things. First, it’s famous for its beauty and artworks, such as the Paris-inspired gargoyles. Second, the view of the Rocky mountains, and its proximity to the famous ski centres and resorts, such as Vail and Breckenridge.
There’s only one FBO in charge of the handling of private jets, namely Signature Flight Support, which offers a wide variety of amenities and services. Those flying with private jets can arrange a limousine to pick them up from the airport, get hotel reservations, or order catering services and a lot of different things.
Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport
Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport is both the smallest airport in the Denver area and the closest one to the city’s downtown. It’s classified as a “reliever airport”, and mainly concentrates on corporate flights and flight schools. It’s a great choice if you want to stay out of crowds and enjoy a relaxed and luxurious experience.
There are two FBOs offering their services at Rocky Mountain Airport:
They provide different kinds of services related to ground transportation, great restaurants, and a lot of shopping options.
4. Private Charter: San Francisco to Washington DC
Travelling 3,800 kilometres from the Golden City to the capital of the USA will take you around five hours with any kind of private jet. There are a wide variety of aircraft types, from light to heavy jets, and the difference between the flight time each of them offers is not great. The only thing that you want to think about is how many people you’re going to take with you.
San Francisco to Washington DC: Pricing Options
The prices are quite regular too. Nothing exceeds the 56,000 dollar mark, and differences between the prices of the various types of jets is minimal. Interestingly enough, the heavy jet is the cheapest option available.
Check the estimated prices of the charters in the table below.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to Washington DC | Estimated flight time |
Very Light Jet | 6-8 | From $53,950 | 5 h 10 min |
Midsize Jet | 9 | From $54,900 | 4 h 50 min |
Super-Midsize Jet | 10 | From $56,100 | 4 h 40 min |
Heavy Jet | 96 | From $51,500 | 4 h 45 min |
San Francisco: Airport Options
There are three airports in the broad San Francisco area, all of them harmoniously distributed on different sides of the bay. San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport lie opposite to each other, namely on the opposite sides of the bay, and Norman Y. Mineta is close to the city’s downtown. All of them are very modern and serve international flights and clients.
San Francisco International Airport
Second biggest in California after LAX and the largest near the city, San Francisco International Airport is a major institution, servicing travellers from all sides of the world. It’s both close and well connected to the city, and offers a variety of transportation options between the two: rental cars, taxi services, buses, and trains are at your disposal.
An interesting fact: the first airport museum in the world was opened at San Francisco International Airport in 1980, and it’s still working. If you have a couple of hours to spare, make sure you take a look.
There is only one FBO offering its service at the main San Francisco airport, the famous Signature Flight Support. They’ll be more than enough to cater to your every need.
Oakland International Airport
Located just 16 kilometres from the centre of San Francisco, Oakland International Airport’s main street lies on the great roads that connect it to the city. The airport can be reached from the city by renting a car, using taxi, or taking a bus at any time of the day. The average taxi fare is 58 dollars.
There are two FBOs that offer their services at Oakland International Airport:
The first is well known for the clean and expensively furnished facilities, and professional staff; the second, for their great experience and long tradition — they’ve been servicing planes and private flyers since 1946.
Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport
The second biggest airport in the Frisco area — after San Francisco International Airport — is also the furthest away from San Francisco downtown. The average taxi fare is around 110 dollars (which is still not too much), but there are also other types of transportation available: renting a car, or taking the train or the bus.
Two American FBO giants offer their services at Norman Y. Mineta airport, both of them with a rich tradition of servicing customers:
5. Private Charter: Los Angeles to Washington DC
Flying from Los Angeles to Washington DC is basically flying from one side of America to the other — from the westernmost to the easternmost point of the continent. The distance amounts to no less than 3,600 kilometres, which is slightly shorter than the flight from San Francisco. The flight is also insignificantly shorter, a little less than five hours on average.
Los Angeles to Washington DC: Pricing Options
The prices, too, are similar to the previous flight, except for the light jet, which is significantly cheaper. Nothing exceeds the 55,500 mark, and the heavy jet is, again, cheaper than some of the lighter options.
Check the detailed prices in the table below, and choose which one suits you the most.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to London | Estimated flight time |
Very Light Jet | 4-6 | From $55,500 | 5 h and 40 mins |
Light Jet | 6-8 | From $33,550 | 4 h and 50 mins |
Midsize Jet | 10 | From $41,950 | 4 h and 35 mins |
Heavy Jet | 96 | From $48,900 | 4 h and 25 min |
Los Angeles: Airport Options
Los Angeles is the commercial and VIP centre of the west coast. That means that — like Las Vegas, for example — it attracts a rich clientele who isn’t afraid of spending a lot of money on luxurious goods and services. That’s why the airports and FBOs are accustomed to dealing with those kinds of clients and catering to their every need.
There are a lot of airports in the wider area around LA, but we recommend the following four:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Hollywood Burbank Airport
- Long Beach Airport
- Van Nuys Airport
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Serving more than 88 million passengers a year, close to the Pacific Ocean, and located 30 kilometres from the centre of LA — do we have to say anything else? LAX is one of the best and busiest transport hubs in both the USA and the world, boasting 10 terminals and servicing around 100 airlines.
Two major FBOs are providing their services at LAX:
Hollywood Burbank Airport
Burbank Airport is perfect for flying privately, if you prefer less crowded areas and generally quiet places. It has a strict noise regulating policy, which forbids commercial flights after the 7:00 am to 10:00 pm time frame. It’s also the closest airport on this list to downtown LA, and many of its famous neighbourhoods, such as Pasadena, Hollywood, and San Fernando.
Again, two FBOs are offering their services at the airport:
Long Beach Airport
Long Beach Airport is another perfect choice if you want to be really close to the city, and avoid the hustle and bustle that necessarily goes with huge metropolises. It’s located only three kilometres from Los Angeles Downtown. It’s very well connected by a system of interconnected transit routes, and quite close to Disneyland too.
There are two available FBOs at Long Beach Airport:
Van Nuys Airport
Van Nuys is another great airport in the wider LA area. Also, it’s one of the busiest ones in the world, with over 230,000 landings and takeoffs every year. Being close to Hollywood, a lot of cult movies were shot here, like the unforgettable Casablanca in 1942.
There are no less than four FBOs providing their services at Van Nuys. Here’s the list, presented in no particular order:
6. Private Charter: London to Washington DC
The London to DV flight usually lasts about eight-and-something hours, and the distance amounts to around 6,000 kilometres. Obviously, you should prefer the heavier jets as you won’t be making any stops for refuelling while enjoying more space and amenities.
London to Washington DC: Pricing Options
This is the first flight on this list which stretches out of North America, and the prices are immediately starting to rise. Namely, they are literally doubled. The heavy jet and the ultra long jet — which are your obvious choices — range between 100,000 and 120,000 dollars.
For detailed information, check the table below.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to Washington DC | Estimated flight time |
Midsize Jet | 8 | From $88,450 (£73,148) | 9 h 10 min |
Super Midsize Jet | 6-11 | From $98,100 (£81,128) | 8 h 20 min |
Heavy Jet | 4-18 | From $101,900 (£84,271) | 8 h 20 min |
Ultra Long Range | 6-18 | From $119,500 (£98,826) | 7 h 50 min |
London: Airport Options
London is a major transportation hub, especially in relation to travelling between the Old and the New Continent. It has a long history and tradition, and a developed work ethic in serving high-end clients. That’s why it’s a paradise for flying by private jet, with a lot of VIP services and exceptional security.
These are the three most suitable and popular airports if you choose to travel by private jet:
- Luton Airport
- Stansted Airport
- Heathrow Airport
Luton Airport
Luton Airport has quite a long tradition, going strong since before World War II — or 1938. It’s located around 45 kilometres from the centre of London, and it can be reached by a wide variety of transport options: car, renting a car, taxi, bus, or train. The average drive amounts to no more than 30 minutes.
Four FBOs are at your disposal at Luton Airport:
Stansted Airport
Slightly further away from the city, Stansted Airport is located around 70 kilometres from London’s Mile End. But that shouldn’t be a big problem, since the transport options are great in the UK, and you can travel from Oxford Street to Stansted in less than 50 minutes.
There аre precisely six FBOs in this airport, which offers a lot of possibilities and choices. The main one is Universal Aviation, which has been doing its job at Stansted for more than 30 years. They’re most famous for their VIP rooms, transportation, catering services — and for being the only handlers at the airport.
The other five FBOs, listed in no particular order, are:
Heathrow Airport
Finally, we have the great Heathrow Airport. Sending and receiving travellers since 1966, it’s both the busiest airport in the UK (and the seventh busiest in the world) and the closest to the centre of London — it’s only 22 kilometres away. You can take the train in London and reach Heathrow in around 20 minutes.
For those concerned with safety, there’s a further bonus. The airport is located near the Royal Air Force (RAF) base, one of the most famous air-power in the world.
As it befits its status, Heathrow Airport offers a wide range of available FBOs. The number, actually, is eight, and some of them are quite big names in the FBO business. Here’s the complete list:
- Universal Aviation
- Meridian Teterboro
- Ross Aviation
- Signature Flight Support
- Sheltair
- Jet Aviation
- Greenwood Lake Aviation
- Lynx FBO Network
7. Private Charter: Istanbul to Washington DC
Istanbul is fourth on the list of the most prosperous cities in the world, and one of the true rulers of airspace. It’s no secret that in newer times it became an air travel giant. That being said, travelling from the capital of Turkey to the capital of the USA — or around 8,400 km — is not a joke. This is both the longest and the most expensive flight on our list.
Istanbul to Washington DC: Pricing Options
The light and the midsize jets are out of the picture for flights that cover such a long distance, and the only choices available are the heavy and ultra long range jets. The cost is around slightly less and slightly more than 150,000 dollars.
For detailed prices in dollars and their equivalent in Turkish lira, check the table below.
Aircraft Type | Max no of passengers | Average price to Washington DC | Estimated flight time |
Heavy Jet | 9-15 | From $147,350 (₺2,757,360) | 11 h 35 min |
Ultra Long Range | 6-18 | From $157,450 (₺2,946,361) | 10 h 55 min |
Istanbul: Airport Options
As we said, Istanbul in particular is a very important centre that connects the whole world, due to its specific geographical location as the historical middle point between the West and the East. It offers two great and quite large airports:
- Istanbul airport (IST)
- Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW)
Istanbul airport
Istanbul airport is located around 54 kilometres from the city centre. Acar ride will amount to an hour. If you prefer a quicker option, and you don’t mind spending a few extra bucks, you can rent a helicopter to take you to the airport.
Istanbul airport offers a wide variety of facilities and services, many of them on the VIP side. Lounges, private check ins, leisure facilities, and concierges are some of them.
The four available FBOs at the airport are waiting for you, and are ready to provide a real VIP experience:
- Gozen
- Bilen Air Services
- Universal Aviation
- Air Kargo Aviation
Sabiha Gokcen Airport
The second airport on this list is located around 43 kilometres from the city. You can reach it by car in an hour, if the traffic is not terrible. Keep in mind that that’s not usually the case in Istanbul. Renting a private shuttle is probably a more practical option, and you’ll reach the airport in half an hour.
The airport offers private terminals, great shopping options, VIP lounges, and a lot of tasty restaurants. The two FBOs available at Sabiha Gokcen Airport are:
Which Jets Can Fly You To Washington DC?
As most of the flights on our list are limited to North America (the USA and Canada), light and medium jets will probably do the job, except if you’re travelling with a larger company — in that case, you’ll need a heavy jet. But, for longer flights, like the one from London or Istanbul, heavy and ultra-long range jets are the only choices for you.
Light Jets
Light jets are another great option for short continental flights. Their reservoir can take fly for around 2,700 before it has to stop and refill. They’re also very cheap, and a perfect option for short business flights to nearby locations. They can reach speeds of around 445 knots.
We recommend Pilatus PC-24 because it offers a great combination of speed and comfort, with a lot of luggage space.
Super-Light Jet
Very light jets are perfect for continental flights. They are — as the jet companies say — a great combination of a light and a midsize jets, offering the best of both worlds. That means a cost-effective, fast, and comfortable ride. The shortest routes on our list are very suitable for super-light jets, since they have to refill every hour.
We recommend the Nextant 400 XTI precisely for the things we said.
Midsize – Super Midsize Jets
Midsize and super midsize jets — as the name suggests — are slightly bigger and have more endurance than the light types. Because of that, they are the usual choice of preference for flights which take more than a couple of hours. The flight from Denver to Washington is the most suitable example of that. They can reach a max speed of around 460 knots.
We recommend the Hawker 900XP with its capacity of eight seats, and a max duration of flight of around eight hours.
Heavy Jets and Ultra Long Range
The pinnacle of endurance, comfort, speed, technology, and safety, heavy jets and the ultra long range are built to take you to the furthest corners of the world. They can fly from more than 9,600 kilometres without needing to refill, and do that at a really great speed. Renting one usually means having available Wi-Fi, service, broad cabins, and even beds.
We recommend Falcon 2000L for travelling from London or Istanbul to Washington DC.
Conclusion
Washington DC is the capital of the USA, and that’s not a small thing. The city is both historically and politically important, and attracts a lot of tourists, both from America and the other parts of the world, at all times of the year. The city has great connections, and it’s quite easy to find private jets that’ll take you there in no time.
