Entrepreneur

‘Entrepreneur’ is quite a broad job title, but if you’re business-savvy and know how to think outside the box, it could be the role for you. 

It’s never been easier than it is now to start your own business. There are plenty of professionals and companies who can help you to get things up and running if you don’t know where to start, and the widespread use of social media means marketing is a piece of cake. 

Plus, running your own business means you’d be your own boss – meaning you can work from wherever you choose!

The amount of money you’ll earn will depend on how successful you are, but if you put in the work you could end up pretty well off. The average annual salary is £44,768, with the potential to increase to six figures if you’re successful.

Game Developer

£43,113 p.a.

Moving into the tech world, the role of game developer is a dream if you’re good with computers and can often be done fully remote, allowing plenty of travel.

You’ll need a solid knowledge of modern programming languages such as JavaScript, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. You’ll also need to work well in a team, as this job will require you to work with other developers and product managers. 

The average salary for a game developer is £43,113, however more experienced senior developers can earn much more than that. 

Environmental Consultant

£40,000 p.a.

Environmental consultants provide expert advice and assistance to companies with the aim of minimising environmental damage. They work across a range of areas, including pollution control, climate change and the effects of agriculture on local wildlife. 

To become an environmental consultant you will need a minimum of a good undergraduate degree in environmental science or a related discipline. You’ll need a solid understanding of environmental policy, good business skills, and the ability to communicate effectively.

Environmental consultants often spend a lot of time doing field research in various locations, so this could be perfect to satisfy your travel cravings. Expect to earn an average salary of £40,000.

Meteorologist

£33,589 p.a.

This one could be a little harder to get into, but it’s a good option if you have the qualifications. You’ll often need a PhD in a scientific discipline, or equivalent experience, to become a meteorologist. 

Meteorologists aren’t just weather reporters – they are highly-trained scientific professionals who observe and forecast the weather based on scientific data. 

The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force employ meteorologists. A position as a meteorologist with either of these would involve plenty of travel to locations all around the world, allowing you to get familiar with the local climates.

You can expect to earn an average salary of £33,589 as a meteorologist.

Technical Author

£33,235 p.a.

Technical authors are tasked with writing technical and scientific information across a variety of formats, including articles, web pages and how-to guides. 

To be a technical author, you need to really understand the products and services that you’re writing about. A degree in a STEM field is usually a requirement, as well as excellent written communication skills to be able to convey technical information clearly and concisely.

Plenty of technical authors work freelance, so you don’t need to be tied to a particular company or location. The average salary is £33,235, but you could definitely earn more than this with experience.

Dream jobs for jet-setters with fewer qualifications

If you dream of living the travel lifestyle but don’t have a degree or similar qualification under your belt, don’t worry! There are still plenty of opportunities out there that don’t require as much specific training or experience.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the trendiest jobs for jet-setters that require minimal qualifications, and sorted them from highest to lowest average annual salary.

Doula

No degree needed, complete training with approved provider

Doulas are childbirth experts who provide support for expecting parents through pregnancy, birth and parenthood. Pregnancy and childbirth can be a very difficult time for parents, and the role of the doula is to make it all a little easier.

You don’t need any specific qualifications to become a doula, but to become registered you’ll need to complete training with an approved provider such as Doula UK. The NHS employs a small number of doulas, but the majority are employed directly by the parent(s) they work with. This offers plenty of flexibility on location!

How much you can expect to earn as a doula varies depending on how much clients are willing to pay, but an average annual salary is £31,370.

Game Tester

No degree needed, good knowledge of gaming

If you don’t have the skills necessary to be a game developer but are still passionate about the field, you could consider becoming a game tester instead. 

Game testers test new computer games at the development stage to check the quality and assess if there are any issues or bugs in the software. You’ll need to have good knowledge of gaming in general, as well as a keen eye for detail and possibly previous experience of quality assurance work. 

Game testing can usually be done remotely, so you can pick where you want to work from. Expect to earn an average salary of £30,422. 

Blogger

No degree needed, good writing skills

In today’s age, anyone can be a blogger. All you need is an internet connection, a laptop (or similar) and a niche. 

Of course, being a successful blogger is a little more complicated. You’ll need to be a good writer with knowledge of social media marketing, and some decent technical skills too if you want to set up your own blog. 

Being a professional blogger is one of the most flexible jobs around: you can work from pretty much anywhere that has WiFi, and usually pick your hours to suit you. You can also do freelance work for companies looking for blog writers, but you’ll probably need to build up a portfolio of your own work first.

Virtual Tour Guide

No degree needed, some hospitality/tourism experience beneficial

Did you know that virtual tours exist? Particularly handy during COVID travel restrictions, live virtual tours allow you to explore a new destination without having to leave the comfort of your home.

If you have good communication skills and are passionate about a particular city or area, as well as some previous experience in hospitality, travel and tourism, you could earn up to £26,880 by becoming a virtual tour guide. 

Food Tester

No degree needed, accurate sense of taste and knowledge of food

Another dream job for foodies!

This one doesn’t pay brilliantly, with an average salary of £18,877, but it could definitely be worth it if you’re passionate about food. Professional food taste testers often sit on a panel of other testers, and are required to taste new and inventive products to give their honest opinion on the taste and quality of the food.

You could work as a food tester in many different countries, though you will need to have a fluent grasp of the local language to be able to offer your opinions. Companies such as Mondelez International and Adecco often hire food testers, so keep an eye out.
