London to Nice: Airport Options
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the selection of airports available in and around London. Some are better suited to private clientele than others and some may impose flight restrictions.
London City Airport
London City Airport is the closest of all the airport options, only 14 kilometres from the city centre. It’s worth noting that not all aircraft are cleared to operate at London City Airport, so it’s relatively exclusive. Flights are restricted and you can only fly between the hours of 0530 and 2200 Monday to Friday, with weekend operating hours even further restricted. You’re guaranteed 90-second departure checks at the airport’s only FBO – London City Jet Centre.
RAF Northolt
The next closest airport is RAF Northolt, only 25 km from London. This airport is primarily for private jet use and is considered a good alternative to Heathrow, which is generally too busy for private jets.
RAF Northolt does impose flight restrictions on night flights due to residential housing in the flight path. There is just one FBO working from RAF Northolt – Universal Aviation.
Biggin Hill Airport
Biggin Hill Airport is used exclusively for private jets and they have tailored their approach to what private customers want. Flights can be scheduled and the airport will open as needed. The airport is only 26 km from London.
There are 2 FBOs at Biggin Hill, which include:
Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is located about 28 kilometres west of London. Flying through Heathrow Airport by private jet is generally not recommended because it’s busy with commercial airline movement.
It does, however, have a terminal dedicated to private customer access and two FBOs, which include:
Gatwick Airport
Located about 40 kilometres from London, Gatwick Airport is a major commercial airline hub. There is one FBO located here for private jet flights and coordination – Signature Flight Support.
Farnborough
Getting a bit further away now is Farnborough Airport, located around 56 kilometres from the city centre. Farnborough Airport specifically attracts business travellers, and all processes are fast and convenient. There is one FBO at Farnborough Airport, which is TAG Aviation Farnborough.
Luton Airport
London Luton Airport is also 56 kilometres from central London, but that doesn’t negatively impact its popularity with private jet customers. It remains one of the most popular private jet airports in the London area. It’s possible to schedule flights 24 hours, 7 days a week, and the airport is frequently praised for quick customs procedures.
Luton Airport has two private FBO operators:
Stansted Airport
Stansted Airport is used for both commercial and private jet flights and is located about 60 kilometres from London. The airport is functional 24 hours a day, and smooth processes will have you onboard quickly.

There are 3 FBOs located here:
Al Maktoum/World Central International Airport
Dubai World Central International, also known as Al Maktoum Airport, is much further from Dubai. A significant 57 kilometres away from the centre of Dubai means that some customers still prefer the convenience and proximity of Dubai International over this one.

- Jet Aviation Dubai DWC
- Jetex FBO Dubai
