Sunny Los Angeles and bustling New York, the two most popular cities in the United States, have a well-established connection as millions of people travel this route annually. This is why many opt for the driving cross country experience and make a memorable road trip out of it. Buses and trains are other options, but if you want to reach the Big Apple in around 5 hours, a private jet is your best bet.
In this article, I’ll give you the prices you can expect, the types of jets you can take, and the airports/FBOs you can use to make your private flight experience as good as possible.

Los Angeles to New York: Overview
Going from L.A. to N.Y. requires in-depth preparation as it’s not the shortest route you could imagine. The two coastal cities are some 2,800 miles away from one another, and a private jet needs between five and six hours to take off and land. In some cases, when the jet is more powerful and fast, you could reach your destination in just under 5 hours.
The average amount of money one would spend on such a flight ranges somewhere between $35,000 and $45,000. Note that private flight prices vary, depending on the type and size of the jet, as well as the time and date of your flight.
The most common planes in terms of size and power, suitable for such a route, are light, midsize, and heavy planes. A turboprop plane isn’t the best option to cover 2,800 miles, and I doubt any company will offer it.
Another important factor when it comes to pricing is the company you will use to host your flight. The prices you will see below have been taken from Air Charter Service, The Aviation Factory, and FXAir.

Pricing Options
The most common types of jets you should expect to hire are midsize and super-midsize jets. These two categories are very similar, with the latter being faster, more cost-effective, and with a somewhat bigger seat capacity.
However, a well-built light jet can also take you from Los Angeles to New York relatively fast, and if you want even more space, you can also opt for a heavy jet. A distance of 2,800 miles allows you to choose whichever jet size you think will suit you best.
On average, here’s how the prices stand according to The Aviation Factory. In this case, you’ll notice that the biggest and fastest plane is the cheapest. Bear in mind that if you fill in the maximum capacity there, you’ll lose comfort.
Aircraft type | Number of passengers | London to Ibiza route price | Estimated flight time |
Light jet | 7 – 9 | $38,000 | 5 hours 20 minutes |
Midsize jet | 7 – 10 | $32,500 | 5 hours |
Heavy jet | 8 – 19 | $31,000 | 4 hours 50 minutes |
Another reminder is that these are average prices, and a light jet can easily exceed the $38K price point, depending on the model. If you’re interested in particular jet models and how much they go for, scroll to the respective heading below.

Los Angeles to New York Airports
Airports are the least of your worries when flying from Los Angeles to New York. Not that other things should worry you, but these two cities have plenty of airports you can choose from, all of which have private terminals, or FBOs (fixed-base operators) surrounding them.
From Los Angeles International Airport to New York
The most common airport that travelers choose, at least commercial ones, is Los Angeles International. The location is pretty great as it’s situated only 17 miles south of L.A.’s city center. This means that a car ride will last for about half an hour, and since you’ll be looking for an FBO, add a little extra to reaching the one you want.
On the other hand, there are plenty of private terminals that are run by popular companies surrounding L.A. International Airport. Obviously, the one operated by Signature Flight Support is quite popular, but other good ones are present as well, such as Atlantic Aviation and Total Airport Services. Don’t think too much about which one to pick, as they are all very well-equipped with classy waiting lounges, nicely-trained personnel, and offer flexible take-off times.
From Los Angeles Long Beach Airport to Las Vegas
Long Beach Airport is a more affordable option as tickets, fees, and taxes are usually cheaper here than they are at the FBOs around L.A. International. However, given that it’s around Long Beach, it’s located a bit further from the city’s downtown, or 25 miles away, so you’ll need a bit over half an hour to reach the runway by car.
Even though it’s more affordable, this airport offers marvelous private terminals, with the always present Signature Flight Support running one of them. You can also choose between Ross Aviation and OCR Aviation to host your flight, both offering great FBOs as well. If this airport is close to your residence address, I suggest you go for it.
From Los Angeles Van Nuys Airport to Las Vegas
Van Nuys Airport used to be and still is largely used by the military, which is why you won’t find any commercial flights or popular airlines there. The facility is located some 22 miles to the east of Los Angeles’ center, taking you about 30 minutes to reach it by car.
Although there aren’t many commercial flights, that’s not the case with private arrangements. Here’s which FBOs you can expect to find in their surroundings.
From Los Angeles John Wayne Airport to Las Vegas
John Wayne Airport, located near Los Angeles, is as cool as it sounds. It was renamed in the ‘70s after the famous western actor and Hollywood star, from Orange County Airport, which we say was a great decision. Just like the “old” name suggests, it serves the citizens of O.C. and those of L.A.’s greater area, and it still remains a popular spot for private travelers.
Since it belongs to Los Angeles’ greater area, it’s the most complicated one to reach. You have to pass some 40 miles more or less from downtown L.A., which is about 40 minutes by car. Here’s which FBOs you can expect to choose from:
- AciJet;
- Clay Lacy;
- Mac Air;
- OCFC (Orange County Flight Center);
- Sta Jets;
- Royal Aviation;
- General Aviation;
- Regency Air.

Which Planes Can You Fly to New York from Each Category?
Now, let’s go over some great jet models that are being offered by Air Charter Service, Private Fly, and FXAir.
Small and Midsize Jets
The length of this route mainly requires a bigger jet, although many light jets can easily take this course. That’s mostly due to space since it’s a five-to-six-hour flight and you probably want your comfort, but if this is not a priority, let’s see some great models that can take you to New York.
A good choice for a light jet would be the Citation CJ3, a slick-looking luxury jet, seating 8 people. Very comfortable and fast, with a maximum cruise speed of 478 miles per hour (MPH), the CJ3 will take you from Los Angeles to New York in 5 hours and 25 minutes. This will cost you $50,100 if you book via Air Charter Service.
If you decide to go with a midsize jet, which I recommend, consider the Hawker 800XP. It’s a great option if you have some more people on board, as it will cost you $45,750 and it can fit nine people. You’ll get a beautiful, huge cabin with all the comfort you need during the 5 hours and 10 minutes that you’ll spend in the air. Just bear in mind that the exterior design is not so fancy, as this is a model built in 2001.
A more modern and luxurious option for a midsize jet would be the Learjet 60, which Air Charter Service offers for $48,650. This is a slick-looking plane with the capacity to get 8 people on board. It has a pretty powerful engine that needs 4 hours and 55 minutes to reach N.Y. from L.A.
If you want to take things further and really fly with style, another great option is the Gulfstream G200 super-midsize jet. It’s gonna cost you a bit more – $52,800 – but you will have all the space to enjoy all the perks of private flying. It fits 10 passengers and you’ll reach New York in 4 hours and 55 minutes.
Heavy Jets
As we already mentioned, a heavy jet would be the best option for you regarding luxury and comfort, but also if you want to get there a bit faster. Personally, I’d go with the Challenger 604, a superb heavy jet that’ll take you from L.A. to N.Y. in 4 hours and 55 minutes. The seating capacity is 12 people, and if you book it via Air Charter Service, you’ll need $59,900. Note that this is a very nice-looking plane that screams luxury from inside out, which is why I was personally expecting a much higher price than this one.
At the same time, another high-luxury heavy jet that I’d recommend is the Falcon 2000. The interior is much nicer and spacier than the one found in the Challenger 604. It has the same flight time, but a smaller seat capacity, as it fits 10 passengers. The price you need to pay for this one is $66,100, but expect additional charges for fees and taxes. Note that this goes for all the models listed so far.
If comfort is your priority, the Citation XLS is for you. It’s constructed to fit only 8 people but has a huge cabin that’ll give you all the space you need. The only downside is that it’ll reach New York in 5 hours and 30 minutes, and costs $70,800 via Air Charter Service.

Prices Per Plane Type – Overview

Conclusion
Flying from one of the coolest cities on the West Coast to the de facto capital on the East Coast is a very exciting venture. Flying by private plane is even more exciting, and as you can see, you have some great options for such an adventure.
The most important thing to know is that pricing for such a flight starts somewhere at $35,000 and will increase simultaneously with your preferences. A luxury heavy jet, for example, can easily reach a price of $70,000. However, take note that prices vary due to many factors, such as choice of company, date and time of the flight, jet size, and so on.
Los Angeles has plenty of private terminals that you can choose from, and they are located near every bigger or smaller airport. Luckily, New York has a lot, too. So, all that’s left is for you to choose your jet and pack the bags. Have a great time in New York!
