Many would agree that New York is one of the most exciting cities on Earth. After all, it’s one of those cities that are alive 24/7 where you simply can’t get bored, not to mention all the songs written about the Big Apple that perfectly capture its spirit.
Trips to New York are quite frequent if you’re a citizen of Toronto, and especially if you’re a business person who often needs to travel between these two North American business hubs. No matter what brings you to the Big Apple, a private jet will take you there in around 1 hour, making this the best way to travel from Toronto.

Toronto to New York: Overview
The two de facto capitals of their respective countries are pretty close to one another, even by road. There are only around 500 miles between the cities, which doesn’t take more than 8 hours to pass by car, even if you stop to admire the Niagara Falls on your way.
Obviously, a private jet will take you to New York much faster, as the estimated flight time is usually 1 hour, a bit more if you’re taking a turboprop plane. This means that you can take off from Toronto the same morning of your business meeting in New York, and still arrive fresh and on time.
Private jets are not cheap to rent, but a distance like this will not create a big hole in your bank account. Prices vary a lot when it comes to private flying, but a flight like this should cost you at least $5,000, and a maximum of $20,000. This figure can always go higher based on your demands.
Picking a private airport, terminal, or FBO (fixed-base operator) to take off and land is an important aspect of private flying, and there are multiple airports in Toronto suitable for private flyers, just like in New York. You’ll have to check the distance between your home and the airport , and the airport and your meeting point, so you could calculate which one suits you best, but more on that later on in the article. First, let’s start with the cost.

Pricing Options
The trickiest part of private flying is the prices since each company has different prices and different systems for calculating the final figure. Most providers will give you a before taxes and fees price, and most will only give you an estimate if you specifically request a quote, like LunaJets, for example.
When it comes to the jets, all jet sizes can successfully complete the distance from Toronto to New York. A turboprop might be a good option if you only care about reaching New York and saving some money.
Otherwise, a light or midsize jet would be perfect for this trip, while a heavy jet might be tricky to land at some of the smaller terminals. However, it is feasible, especially if you’re flying with a big party.
The prices that you will see in the table below are taken from The Aviation Factory’s official website. The prices are expressed in US dollars.
Toronto to New York Average Flight Prices
Aircraft type | Number of passengers | Toronto to New York route price | Estimated flight time |
Turboprop | 4 – 19 | $5,500 | 1 hour 30 minutes |
Light jet | 4 – 9 | $7,500 | 1 hour 10 minutes |
Midsize jet | 6 – 11 | $8,500 | 1 hour 5 minutes |
Heavy jet | 7 – 18 | $13,500 | 1 hour 5 minutes |
As the table shows, a turboprop is the most lucrative option in this case. If you’re a team of say 10 people and don’t have a problem flying for some extra 20 minutes, you will save a lot of money compared to hiring a midsize or heavy jet, for example.
This is because you rent a whole plane, so if you find a jet fitting 19 people for $5,500, that ticket will amount to some $300 per person.
Toronto to New York Airports
Unlike New York, Toronto has fewer airports serving the needs of the population. There are two commercial airports – Billy Bishop City Airport and Pearson International. The former is much smaller while the latter has a bigger capacity. Pearson is also a bit further away from Toronto’s central area.

From Billy Bishop City Airport (YTZ) to New York
Billy Bishop is a unique example of an airport in a multi-million city that’s located really close to the city center, which also means close to Toronto’s main business and tourism center. It’s only 10 minutes away by car if your starting point is Toronto’s Old Town. However, the airport is a bit small, making it a bit more complicated for bigger jets to maneuver.
But if you’re using any jet other than those in the heavy category, there are a couple of FBOs at Billy Bishop and the surroundings that could be a great choice for you. The Porter fixed-base operator runs a separate facility at YTZ where it offers all sorts of FBO and handling services.
Porter offers both passenger and ground services. This means that it’ll offer you comfortable lounges, access to the Internet, reading materials, or transportation to the city center, but will also give you the opportunity to hangar your jet, refuel it, or let them to a quick check-up under the wing, i.e fix or check your engine or other parts of the aircraft.
Another great choice for an FBO is the Stol Port FBO at Billy Bishop. This provider offers great passenger services such as a comfortable lounge, showers, washrooms, but also Internet access, a conference room with a 4K television included, and similar amenities.
The staff will be glad to offer you any kind of assistance such as booking you a hotel, getting you a ride to the center, and so on. For jet owners, it’s important to know that you could have Stol Port maintain your jet, refuel it, or simply hangar it.
From Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) to New York
Toronto Pearson Airport is located a bit further away from the city’s center, compared to Billy Bishop. To reach Pearson you’ll need some 20 minutes by car, or half an hour if you decide to use public transportation.
However, this airport is much bigger than Billy Bishop and welcomes far more people. In 2018, it attracted some 50 million people. It has somewhat a bigger choice for private flyers, in terms of FBOs, and the runways are big enough for heavy jets to take off and land.
This airport has Signature Flight Support running a private terminal. In this FBO, you can be sure to have Internet access, conference and meeting rooms, fantastic lounges, kitchen, showers, and everything else that goes with a superb FBO.
Sky Service has often been described as Canada’s best fixed-base operator. Indeed, this company runs multiple terminals across the country and offers under-the-wing services as well, such as aircraft maintenance, refueling, or storage.
Apart from that, Sky Service offers extremely comfortable and fancy lounges, air taxi services, showers, separate rooms for the crew, and other services and amenities. They will also assist you if you need to book a hotel or a table at some of Toronto’s best restaurants.
The staff will also assist you if you need to get a ride or rent a car. You can ask for a limousine to pick you up and take you where you want to go, or if that’s not your vibe, they will provide you a shuttle to the wanted destination.
New York City Airports
New York is a far different story than Toronto in terms of airports, as there’s a bigger choice of private terminals and airports dedicated to private flying. The three most common airports in New York City (NYC) are John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia, and Newark.
However, these are most suitable for commercial flying. For your needs, I’d say that Teterboro in New Jersey is number one, while the second place is probably shared by LaGuardia and JFK. Newark should be off the list if you ask me since it’s too far away and tricky to reach. Also, there aren’t enough FBOs within or in its surroundings.
John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)
Unsurprisingly, JFK is the first airport that comes to mind when you think of NYC. It’s an excellent airport handling millions of passengers every year and is very easy to reach from Manhattan with all the shuttles taking you there.
However, it’s not the best choice for private flyers, because this airport is definitely more focused on commercial flyers. Don’t get me wrong, it’s completely possible to fly private from JFK, it’s just that the choice of private terminals is rather limited.
But if you do decide to land at JFK, Sheltair Aviation is running a solid FBO at Terminal Building 145. This private terminal has excellent customer service, as the staff will gladly assist you with accommodation booking, finding a restaurant, or taking you to the snooze room. The FBO also offers VIP concierge services, Internet access, catering.
There is another fixed-base operator at JFK that’s worth mentioning, and that’s Allied Aviation. This company has been in business for six decades and has quite an offer. The service provider also works in the under-the-wing department, so you can also hire it to refuel your jet, maintain it, or store it in one of the hangars.
As a fixed-base operator, Allied Aviation offers courtesy cars, a comfortable passenger lounge, business facilities with meeting and conference rooms, Internet access, and other amenities.
LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia is a perfect choice for people living in Queens and the area or those who are headed towards that destination. But if you have to go to Manhattan once you land, then LaGuardia might not be the best option for you.
But the LaGuardia airport does have good infrastructure for private flying, hosting Sheltair as the standard fixed-base operator. Sheltair runs a private terminal at Marine Air Terminal, located within the airport building.
The FBO is run by true professionals that will offer you services such as on-site car rental, complimentary interior cleaning of the jet, catering, Internet access, and plenty more. The lounges look really nice, and there is a beautiful garden in front, for when the weather’s right.
Teterboro Airport
I already said that I find Teterboro to be the most convenient airport when it comes to private flying, and I’m pretty sure most private flyers will agree. Teterboro is technically located in New Jersey, on the other side of the Hudson River. However, it only takes about 20 minutes to reach it from Manhattan, Times Square if you wish.
This airport is dedicated to private flying, with plenty of FBOs in its surroundings. Here’s a list of the best fixed-base operators at Teterboro. Make sure to review them carefully and choose the most suitable one for you:
- Air Bound Aviation;
- Atlantic Aviation;
- Meridian Teterboro;
- Greenwood Lake Aviation
- Ross Aviation;
- Million Air White Plains;
- Linden Airport Management;
- Lynx FBO Network.

Which Jet Models Can Fly You to New York From Toronto?
As we already mentioned, jets from any category can fly you to New York from Toronto, as the distance range is not that impressive. A turboprop or a light jet would be enough, but opting for a midsize or heavy jet is always an option.
Small (Light Jets) and Midsize Jets
If you decide to go for a turboprop, the Beech BE90 King Air is a good option, but the trip will last a little longer. It needs 1 hour and 38 minutes to reach New York, and the price to pay for the jet is around $4,700. The jet is quite cost-effective and has the ability to land on grass runways. The system it has fully integrated is Collins Pro Line 21, which you would usually find on larger jets. The BE90 has a seating capacity of six people.
If you want to get there faster via turboprop, go with the Pilatus C-12. It’s pretty fast and can reach New York in 1 hour and 16 minutes while carrying a maximum of six passengers. To rent it for this route, you’d spend some $4,500.
But if you’re in for a light jet, you should consider the Eclipse 500. The jet can be rented via Air Charter Service for some $14,000, which is quite more expensive than the other jets. This one has a marvelous cabin, with seats facing one another, which is great for short trips like this. The cabin has a maximum capacity of 5 people, and it will reach New York in 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Next, we have midsize jets, which are a faster and more comfortable option for this route. If you decide to go for it, I suggest renting the Hawker 800. This jet needs only 54 minutes to reach NYC and can fit 8 people in its cabin. It costs some $8,000 to rent and it’s one of the most desirable midsize aircraft, due to its combination of comfort, range, and affordability.
Another midsize jet that I would recommend is the Learjet 60, which will cost you around $8,500 to rent. This jet also needs 54 minutes to fly from Toronto to New York but has a seating capacity of 7 passengers, one less than the Hawker 800. It has a very spacious and well-designed cabin, providing you with all the comfort you need.
Heavy Jets
You are not in absolute need of a heavy jet since this distance is quite short. However, if you desire even more comfort or are flying with a large party, by all means, go for it.
The first heavy jet that comes to mind is the Gulfstream G350, which is quite cost-effective and has a spacious walk-around cabin, including a sofa that you can use to lay down for a bit. It will cost you some $12,000 to rent it, and you can take 13 people with you. You will reach New York City in 51 minutes, according to Private Fly.
The second heavy jet that I’ll recommend is for those who don’t mind spending a little extra. The Falcon 2000LX will pass the Toronto – New York route in 54 minutes, and will cost you around $15,500 to rent. The seating capacity is only 10 people, but they will all enjoy maximum comfort.

Prices Per Plane Type: Overview

Conclusion
Flying private from Toronto to New York should be an easy flight. The distance range is short, flying time is estimated at about one hour, and both cities have a decent offer regarding private airports or FBOs.
The price to pay for such an adventure stretches from some $5,000 up to $20,000 (US). Going above 20K is possible, but rare. As mentioned, the flight lasts for one hour, except for turboprops that might need an extra half an hour.
Happy travels!
